Tuesday the 14th February 2017 – Valentine’s Day! And we, the class of 2017, would LOVE to introduce you to the relaunch of the Digital Scot, the collaborative blog that showcases our digital marketing technical skills.
Having returned to Robert Gordon University from our TWO-MONTH winter break, we are eager to get started and put into practice the skills we learned in Semester 1.
If you are wondering exactly what an MSc Digital Marketing student studies, then the following will hopefully give you a brief insight into this exciting and innovative course. In the short 12 weeks of Semester 1, we have learned a variety of skills, tools and techniques and we would love to share our experiences with you! The two modules we studied were Digital Production Tools and Techniques (Day 1) and Digital Marketing Strategy (Day 2).
Week 1
Day 1 – Speed dating, breaking the ice and lecturer introductions.
Day 2 – Getting all set up on Google and The Digital Garage. We also started work on WordPress blog creation.
Week 3
Day 1 – Fifth Ring guest lecturer and introduction to the sprint. We had a real-life client and were tasked with creating a digital marketing campaign.
Day 2 – Bringing our creations to life! We finalised and presented our solutions to the client’s problem.
Week 6
Day 1 – Introduction to HTML and CSS – by far the most challenging section of the semester!
Day 2 – A live photo shoot for our Digital Scot profile images. We also captured a variety of visual assets that we will use within our blog.
Week 10
Day 1 – Video production – The 5-second challenge. In week 10, we became movie directors! In teams, we decided upon a theme and captured then edited 5-second mini movies. This task was in preparation for our final assessment.
Day 2 – Guest lecture from the global marketing agency Digitas LBi.
Week 12
Day 1 – The semester was coming to an end. We were working on our individual projects for our live clients.
Day 2 – End of semester trip to Edinburgh! The highlight of the semester – we visited the offices of Digitas LBi and experienced agency life. Follow our adventure to Edinburgh here.
So what have we learned?
The above was just a brief overview of our day-to-day schedule. We also learned about campaign strategy, mobile marketing, email marketing, A/B testing and content marketing to name but a few!
Semester 1 provided the building blocks. In Semester 2, we’ll implement our new and improved digital marketing technical skills through the running of our Digital Scot website and social channels. We are excited to share with you what we have learned. If you are a future graduate, a marketing professional or if you are simply in a period of career transition, then we aim to showcase the benefits of this course and what you can get out of it.
