Where are you from?
Scotland / UK

What was your undergraduate degree?
BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering / Heriot-Watt University
MSc Pollution Control Management / Heriot-Watt University

Why did you decide to study an MSc in Digital Marketing?
In my most recent position (with an oil and gas consultancy) I ended up doing some work to help with business development and marketing. I really enjoyed it and found that having a background as an engineer in oil and gas helped me to understand exactly where my employers (the consultancy) and their audience (major operators) were coming from. This helped a lot in targeting appropriate advertising content. Subsequent talks with agencies revealed that not many digital marketers have an oil and gas engineering background and I decided it would be an interesting niche to move into.

What do you like best about the course so far?
The areas which have resonated most with me are website and digital strategy auditing. In addition, the ability to use SEO tools to help better position SMEs against their competitors in the marketplace is something I find fascinating. I also really enjoy the potential of Google Analytics and I would love to get further into packages like SpyFu.

What’s your favourite app or website, and why?
I use the BBC News website every morning, more recently turning to their phone app when I have been too busy to sit down at my desktop. I like that it is a trusted and reliable source of information all over the world, covering the stories that have real significance. Since the site also has informative Business pages I can catch up with company news at a glance. It’s faster than trying to read a newspaper and I can quickly scan the headlines to know exactly what is going on in the world before I leave the house. In fact, I would not be comfortable going out my front door without having read it!
